Far from the hustle and bustle of Cozumel or Playa de Carmen, the crystal-clear waters of Tulum’s coastal reefs are characterized by their proximity to untouched, less-crowded dive sites, providing an intimate and undisturbed experience with nature.
Over 500 different marine species have been accounted for on the Yucatan coast. With encounters ranging from majestic sea turtles and graceful rays, to colorful fish species and impressive coral formations, the dive sites around Tulum offer an unparalleled opportunity to explore the natural wonders of the Caribbean Sea.
The vibrant turquoise Caribbean waters of Akumal bay are an ideal location for scuba and nature enthusiasts. Akumal provides an extraordinary opportunity to begin your journey of underwater discovery in one of the most beautiful and biodiverse environments on the planet. The year-round conditions on the coral reef are excellent: with water temperature ranging from 80-90 F and visibility ranging from 40-100 ft, it’s a great place for divers of all levels, with calm waters and mild currents.
The reef is home to an incredible diversity of marine life, including vibrant coral gardens, schools of tropical fish, rays and nurse sharks. Though, perhaps the most awe-inspiring of the native marine life, are the sea turtles–graceful, ancient creatures that glide effortlessly through the ocean–that prefer the protection offered to the bay by the surrounding barrier reefs, and thus are a constant presence here all year long. In the Maya language, “ak,” is turtle, and “umal,” means place, or land. The name “Akumal” refers to the land of the turtles.
The dive sites in Playa del Carmen, located in the Riviera Maya, are known for their crystal clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and abundant marine life.
Dives in Playa del Carmen vary in depth and difficulty, making them suitable for both beginners and experienced divers, and offer the chance to explore from calmer spots to more challenging areas.
